Gottman Couples Therapy Edmonton

What is Gottman Couples Therapy?

John and Julie Gottman have developed an empirically based treatment for couples who are struggling in their relationship. By learning and practicing positive skills, couples experience an increased sense of understanding within the context of their relationship. Couples learn how to maximize their partner’s wellbeing and not focus on their shortcomings.

How Does It Work?

Gottman couples therapy begins with an assessment of the relationship that then informs the therapy process. The goals of this therapy are to reduce conflict, increase intimacy, respect and affection, remove the feeling of stagnancy and increase empathy and understanding. Therapeutic interventions are designed to strengthen the areas of friendship, managing conflict and creating shared meaning. Couples learn how to change their patterns, repair past hurts, increase their closeness and intimacy, and create shared goals.

What can be treated with Gottman Couples Therapy?

Gottman can work with couples who are no longer able to communicate with one another effectively. It can help to address some of the biggest predictors of a relationship ending such as contempt, criticism, defensiveness and stonewalling. Gottman’s therapy can be effective treatment for many issues that couples struggle with including, frequent conflict, emotional distancing, sexual challenges, infidelity, financial problems and parenting challenges.

Gottman couples therapy is not appropriate for couples where there is any violence occurring.

My approach to therapy is through holistic, transformative change that is tailored to your needs and supported by clinical research. I aim to create a refuge where you and I can work together to navigate difficult experiences, tap into your inner wisdom, and develop personalized strategies for growth. I also value attending to the impacts of culture, which is informed by my BFA in Critical and Cultural Practices, the culturally responsive and socially just (CRSJ) counselling model, decolonial theory, and Indigenous Cultural Safety Training.

I use a blend of approaches that are relational, experiential, and embodied. This includes techniques from my training in somatic therapy, parts work (eg. IFS), and Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) which are designed to move you into a greater sense of vitality, purpose, connectedness, and empowerment. I also use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for increasing mental flexibility, deepening resiliency, and supporting behavioural changes aligned
to your values.

When working with children, I primarily draw from play therapy, while also bringing a
strong relational and somatic foundation. I aim to attune to them in expressing their genuine selves, often following the child’s lead, while sometimes offering direction through effective play, movement, and art techniques, as well as collaborating with caregivers to support the best environment for their unique selves to shine and grow. Some areas of specialized interest for me are trauma, grief and loss, anxiety, high sensitivity (empaths), boundaries, perfectionism, 2SLGBTQ+ concerns, spiritual/existential exploration, psychedelic integration, and navigating life
transitions.

You and your little one already have everything in you to heal and flourish — my passion is joining alongside in a compassionate space while occasionally sharing guidance, skills, and a little bit of humour to invite innate healing to emerge.

  • A few things about me outside the therapy room:
I never turn down an opportunity for karaoke – I especially love belting out a good power ballad or a diva tune!
  • I’m a big ol’ curious nerd that loves studying psychology, philosophy, and spirituality, but I’m also the kind of nerd that loves video games on a rainy day and playing board games with friend.
  • My Husky-Lab, Rumi, is one of my greatest teachers and loves in life. He came into
my life right after a significant loss, so he was named after the Sufi poet who wrote
“you have to keep breaking your heart until it opens”.

Finding a therapist that you feel connected to can be a daunting task, so I want to start by commending you for taking that first step in looking at my profile. While it is impossible to know a person through a few paragraphs, I hope in reading a bit about me you feel less overwhelmed about starting your therapeutic journey.

When a client arrives to my office, I think what so many are searching for is hope. Hope that things can get better, hope that things won’t be like this forever. I am here to tell you with confidence that change is possible. I pride myself on being an authentic, straightforward therapist that balances essential qualities such as compassion and mutual respect. I often incorporate humour, sarcasm and levity into sessions, and I seek to limit the formality of the therapeutic process. As your therapist I promise to never sugar coat painful truths to make them more tolerable, nor will I force you to “look on the bright side” when things feel incredibly dark. I will however do my absolute best to be a beacon of light in that darkness and help you connect to hope. My goals for every client are to create a place where you can express yourself fully, without judgment or shame, provide genuine care for your emotions and perhaps have some fun and enjoyment along the way.

I draw primarily from Somatic Experiencing, Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy, mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and self-compassion. Ultimately, I am of the belief that in order to reach deeper levels of healing and growth, we must go beyond the surface of cognition and begin to access underlying thoughts, feelings and sensations that often live in the body and are rooted in our past experiences and relationships. In working with me, you will learn how to connect to your nervous system and emotional inner world, develop deeper knowledge and awareness of yourself and gain valuable skills to tolerate and regulate symptoms of distress so that you can live a more grounded, fulfilled life.

I work with teens aged 15+ and adults and can provide support for a variety of challenges, including trauma, marital issues, work stress, burn out, school challenges, self-harm & suicidality, grief & loss, emotional dysregulation, depression, anxiety, ADHD, parenting stress, gender & sexuality exploration and more. An area of deep passion for me is supporting individuals to heal from dysfunctional family dynamics and attachment traumas. Patterns in our upbringing can have a dramatic impact on our current functioning in ways that we may be unaware of and are associated with low self-esteem, nervous system dysregulation and relationship turmoil. It is incredibly meaningful for me to help my clients shift how they communicate, self-regulate and experience relationships so that they are more satisfying and secure.

A little bit about me outside of my work as a therapist:

• My favorite hobbies are yoga and golf.
• If I could, I would love to be a travelling nomad jumping from place to place and experiencing the incredible beauty this world has to offer.
• I drive a bright pink car that I have had since I was 20!

Hi there!

Welcome to my bio. My approach as a therapist is quite simple – meet you where you are at. Deciding to come to therapy isn’t the easiest and often pops up during challenging moments in life. It can be difficult to share your troubles and inner experiences with someone you don’t know, so providing you with a safe space where you can feel like your authentic self while engaging in the process of change is essential. I place great emphasis on building a strong therapeutic relationship, and prioritize collaboration, trust, empathy and understanding. My role is to help you navigate your journey of processing and healing, and to teach you healthy coping skills that you can use outside of the therapy room.

I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach and will work hard to tailor therapy to what you are looking for. I tend to draw upon techniques from Attachment Therapy, Transactional Analysis, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, Exposure Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Relational-Cultural Therapy.

Random tidbits about me:

  • My favourite genre of music is Nu metal and I have made my first battle vest.
  • I love adventure and trying new things – just tell me where to go and what to wear and I will be there.
  • I’m an entrepreneur at heart and have built and sold my first business.
  • How I self-care: snuggle my puppy, spend time with my family, being in nature and taking naps.

Each person comes to therapy for their own reasons, with their own experiences and goals. One of the things I value most as a psychologist is the uniqueness each person brings. Clients have authorship in their growth, and I consider my role as a psychologist to be a collaborator in that process. I try to cultivate respect, honesty, humor, and supportive conversation.

I have been practicing as a psychologist for the past 33 years, in South Africa and in Canada. My theoretical approach to psychotherapy is rooted in Narrative therapy, however, I don’t believe there is one particular approach that is the panacea to all concerns. With Narrative therapy as a foundation, I follow an integrative approach including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT); Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT); Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PET for trauma). It is important to me to respond to the needs of each client, and I believe in developing a treatment plan that is tailored to each person. My expertise is in the area of mood disorders, including depression and generalized anxiety, panic attacks, trauma (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)), anger issues, loss and bereavement, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), behavioral problems and relationship challenges. I have extensive experience in both individual and family therapy.

On the personal side, I am a proud father and live with my wife and two cats. I value spirituality and experiencing life to the fullest. Happy times to me are visiting and laughing with family and friends, making music, camping, kayaking, hiking in the mountains, motorcycling with friends, playing with dogs, and having moments of awe in nature and places in the world.

I welcome and look forward to meeting and working with prospective adolescent and adult clients and families.

SOUTH OFFICE

I’m Kristy, and I am a registered provisional psychologist. I grew up in the Northwest Territories and spent most of my career working in community mental health programs in the north. Over the past decade, I have worked with individuals of all ages and walks of life and those from big cities to small communities.

These experiences shaped my way of seeing the complexity found in life. Rarely are things simple or black-and-white. In that complexity, we find both challenges and beauty that can facilitate change and growth.

I am passionate about what I do and about the mental health field. I believe that all people have strengths and skills that allow them to change and grow. As a therapist, I like to see myself as part guide, and part supporter, who helps clients navigate through life’s challenges, triumphs, and everything in between. I like to focus on building manageable steps towards long-term change.

As for my approach, I emphasize the individuality of each person I work with and that there is no one-size-fits-all therapy. I come primarily from a person-centered approach that focuses on non-judgement, empathy, safety, trust, and building a relationship between clients and therapist. I also utilize techniques from attachment perceptive, solution-focused therapy, narrative therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I am also trained in (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) EMDR. I take a health at every size (HAES) perspective and am a sex-positive, trauma-informed, LGBTQ+ affirming therapist.

I work with individuals of all ages, including children, teens, adults, and seniors. I work with clients experiencing a variety of concerns including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, relationship challenges, boundary issues, and ADHD.

Starting therapy can be hard, and I am here to support you through the process and join you in your mental health journey.

A little something about me:

My training and employment to date has allowed me to build a strong skillset and develop a deep appreciation for intervention, assessment, and consultation working with children, adolescents, and families with multifaceted needs. I work towards practicing ethically, diligently, and compassionately in all my work.

I am particularly passionate about psychological and psychoeducational assessments. My strong interest in assessment was foundational in pursuing a graduate program which would allow me to actively engage in both research and training opportunities to build a strong skillset in this area.

SOUTH OFFICE

Hello and welcome, I am Heather Dunnigan, a Registered Psychologist. I have earned my masters’ degree and completed my practicum during the pandemic and so I am happy to be able to meet with clients in person!

I believe there exists a natural drive within each of us to continually pursue a meaningful and contented life, and I view counselling as a brave step towards that goal. I am passionate about helping clients identify, dismantle, and re-story the unhelpful messages we receive from ourselves, others, and society to create meaningful alternative stories that embody strength, resilience, and compassion.

Currently, I am seeing individual adults and have a special interest in working with parents. I focus my approach to therapy through feminist, culturally conscious, HAES (health at every size), and attachment lenses. I value collaboration with clients as experts in their own lives and adapt my approach according to client needs. I use a number of therapeutic skills and techniques including self- compassion, dialectical behaviour, strengths-based, narrative, and internal family systems. I also aim to provide a safe(r) space in therapy for supporting and exploring topics such as gender, sexuality, poly, queer, and trans ways of being in the world.

SOUTH OFFICE

I am a dedicated Registered Provisional Psychologist who takes a client-centered approach, tailoring therapeutic interventions to meet each individual’s unique needs and goals. My utmost commitment is to create a safe and non-judgmental space where clients feel genuinely heard, understood, and supported.

With a deep passion for supporting individuals on their journey to healing and self-discovery, I have had the privilege of working with many diverse groups. From youth and children to those in treatment settings and members of marginalized communities, I have witnessed the resilience and strength of individuals from all walks of life. I recognize that humans are complex beings with strengths and difficulties, and it is a gift to empower my clients by acknowledging their strengths and helping them make sense of their context and current ways of existing.

I integrate various therapeutic approaches to facilitate healing and personal growth in my practice. Drawing from Psychodynamic Theory and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), I support clients in uncovering maladaptive coping mechanisms and dysfunctional relational patterns while addressing their root causes. DBT, with its emphasis on acceptance and change, incorporates mindfulness and distress tolerance skills to strike a balance. I also include evidence-based approaches like Gottman and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). Gottman Therapy enhances relationships through effective communication and conflict resolution, nurturing healthy dynamics. On the other hand, EFT emphasizes understanding and working with emotions to promote healing, empowering clients to develop healthier ways of relating to themselves and others.

As a committed Registered Provisional Psychologist, my goal is to make a positive impact in the lives of others. I am passionate about providing a safe and supportive space where clients can explore their emotions, gain insight into their thoughts and behaviours, and develop healthier ways of relating to themselves and others. I graduated with a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University in 2019. Before starting my journey as a Registered Provisional Psychologist, I spent 2.5 years post-graduation, working as a mental health and addictions counsellor while living in a small and remote community in the Northwest Territories. Through this experience, I was able to work with a diverse population experiencing a wide range of presenting issues. During my time up North, I gained a huge appreciation for many things, including Edmonton’s winters, and just how difficult fishing is (at least for me!). Therapy can be a scary (and courageous!) step to take for your wellness. I work to understand your life through your perspective, as this is after all, your journey. You bring unique experiences, values, strengths, and knowledge to therapy that deserve to be respected and honored. I strive to establish a non-judgmental space for you throughout your therapeutic process. I use a trauma informed, strengths-based approach to treatment which means that I tailor counseling and treatment to your individual needs, while focusing on your skills. I incorporate Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Play Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Attachment Therapy to help you or your little one, gain awareness and work towards your goals. I have a special interest in working with trauma and with our youngest population. I have additional training in Play Therapy, and as an EMDR Child Specialist. I enjoy working with children (3+, contact to arrange a consult for your younger than 3 kiddo), and individual adults. A few things about me:
  • There is never a season where I find it to be too cold for iced coffee.
  • I am a novice photographer and my favorite subject is the Northern Lights.

In every childhood there is a door that closes. Only real love waits while we journey through our grief. That is the real trustworthiness between people. In all the epics, in all the stories that have lasted through many lifetimes, it is always the same truth: love must wait for wounds to heal.

SOUTH & NORTH OFFICE

I am in my last year of a Masters of Counselling Psychology. I take a trauma-informed approach to my therapeutic practice, and am drawn to the modalities of IFS/Parts Work, Attachment theory, Polyvagal Theory and Narrative therapy. I believe in the power of re-storying our lives and experiences to help shift our perspectives and open up new possibilities and futures. I also believe that each individual is the love of their own lives, and that strengthening one’s own self love and compassion is the key to easing a variety of challenges and anxieties that we all experience. As a queer woman myself, I am able to hold the unique challenges of queer individuals and couples. I understand how to position individuals within the various systems of oppression that have very real impacts on our lives, and will not shy away from openly talking about what role these systems play in our pain and our healing.

I particularly specialize in Relationship Anxiety /Relationship “OCD”. I understand the unique pain associated with not being able to accept/feel secure in emotionally available, stable relationships, and would love to help others through their journeys of getting off the roller coaster of infatuation and unavailable romantic partnerships. This process involves de-constructing Western narratives of what love and romance are supposed to look and feel like, and helping clients embrace the stable love they’ve been trying to create all along.

In my previous career, I was an organic garden educator and nature connection facilitator. I believe that connecting back to nature is an easy, free way that we help regulate our nervous systems.

SOUTH OFFICE

Welcome! I always find it a bit tricky trying to find the words to describe the “essence of me”, but I’ll try my best! I’ll start this with the necessary details: I graduated with a Master of Counselling from Athabasca University and am a registered psychologist. Prior to this career, I worked in the area of social work for approximately 14 years.

Now onto what you really want to know – how I approach my work! My main focus is the therapeutic relationship, which is my way of saying that you are the most important part of each session. Every person brings with them a unique set of strengths, resources, and experiences that should be honoured and validated, so I want to work with you to understand your narrative, as you experience it. I am passionate about empowerment because I believe focusing on strengths, understanding our value, and locating what’s within our control leads to greater personal growth and well-being.

I believe many of us have been socialized to see things in inflexible, dualistic ways. Things are either good or bad, right or wrong. This includes emotions and thoughts, which can lead to “sticky” thoughts/feelings that are hard. The trouble is, the more we try to avoid, outrun, or ignore these sticky thoughts and feelings, the more powerful they become. Basically, the more we struggle, the more we feed the metaphorical monster. I enjoy working with people to learn skills to drop the struggle, or “unhook”, from these thoughts and feelings so they no longer hold power over you. Once we learn to unhook, we can get back in the driver seat and decide what we want to focus on, allowing us to live our best life aligned with our values.

Within individual therapy, I tend to draw upon techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), but have also taken training in Narrative Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I am also trained in EMDR, which is an evidence-based therapy for trauma, and can also be utilized as an intervention for anything from anxiety and depression. For work with couples, I have studied Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and primarily use this in combination with ACT. Although these are the methods I work most frequently with, my main priority is to work collaboratively with you, to the best of my ability, to help explore your needs and work towards healing.

A few things about me:

  • I love to travel and see new cultures! I’ve been to five continents, currently still missing Africa (and Antarctica but, free fun fact, I also really dislike the cold so odds are that’s a trip I’ll never make!)
  • I love to read and spend almost all my free time with my nose in a book
  • I was made for summer weather – camping and flip flops make my heart happy

SOUTH OFFICE

It can be a difficult decision to come to therapy. To acknowledge there is something in our lives that might not be working for us is uncomfortable. But whatever you are going through, and whatever you have been through, you are capable of change and healing. Together, we can explore how.

I graduated from the University of Calgary with a Master of Social Work. How does social work fit with mental health therapy? Social workers are found in a number of different roles, and at the bachelor’s degree level can work at a wide variety of community and government agencies. At the master’s level, they’re qualified to provide therapy, just like psychologists.

My own life experiences fueled my desire to go into social work. I struggled with mental health challenges as a teen, but, growing up in rural communities in the 90s and early 2000s, those challenges weren’t well understood in my environment. I often felt alone, and as a young adult I spent a lot of time trying to be ok without knowing how to actually do that. My motivation for being in this field has always been to help others know they are not alone and there is hope. On my way to becoming a therapist, I spent five years working as a probation officer, and I loved working in corrections and learning the ins and outs of the justice system. At the same time, I wanted to do more clinical work to address the issues I saw. Now, I specialize in trauma therapy.

I am a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, having completed three years of training in the Somatic Experiencing approach, which aims to support trauma recovery. In your therapy sessions, we may spend time exploring the impacts of your history on your body and nervous system. I believe that healing requires us to listen not only to the story you are telling, but to the story your body is telling. Emotional pain and trauma affect not only our minds, but our physical being as well. The body provides valuable clues that, if we recognize and work with them, can lead us to a place of greater health.

My work is also influenced by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and the mindfulness techniques it includes. ACT encourages us to reject the conditioning many of us have received that tells us some feelings are bad and should be avoided at all costs. It challenges us to embrace our inner emotional landscape, and by doing so invite peace into our lives.

Ultimately, I will tailor my approach to your own unique needs. In the meantime, I honour your bravery in considering therapy.

A bit about me:

  • I love animals, and I used to volunteer as a cat cuddler and a dog walker at the Edmonton Humane Society (my current walking buddy is a chocolate lab named Rafa)
  • My perfect weekend is staying inside with a novel
  • I like watching stand-up comedy; the darker the humour, the better
  • My dream alternative career is being a writer (who lives by the ocean!)

NORTH & SOUTH OFFICE

The basics about me are first that I’m a psychologist with a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Calgary. My love of working with kids and teens comes from working as a school teacher and as a school counsellor and I have loved my experiences working with adults as a vocational rehabilitation counsellor. It’s been so inspiring to me to be welcomed into the world of others to share in the journeys of people from all walks of life.

When it comes to finding solutions for the challenges that life brings, I firmly believe that we’re stronger together. Asking for help gives us the opportunity to learn from one another and shed light on the strengths that we forgot we had inside. It can be one of the scariest things to open up, but I believe that when we create space to be honest, non-judgmental and compassionate with ourselves, we can see new possibilities and venture towards them with a renewed sense of mastery and courage.

I believe in the saying that comes from Narrative Therapy which states that “the problem is the problem, the person is not the problem”. This implies doing away with the blame, shame and stigma that come with life challenges and mental health struggles, instead working together to overcome the problem. When it comes to my therapeutic approach, I’ll often draw on Narrative practices or Solution-Focused questions to help map out strategies for moving forward and determining our goals together. There are times when we’ll use Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) to help get through presenting concerns such as anxiety or depression. We might decide on therapeutic tasks that involve some creative expression or mindfulness practices.

When working with children, youth and families, I’ve learned to engage clients at their developmental level, helping young people to overcome life’s tough problems in a playful, empathetic and hopeful way. With kids, I believe that parents and caregivers are important teachers and team-members when it comes to making changes that last. When appropriate, I will collaborate with parents and create opportunities to educate them on the skills and attitudes that can help create changes outside of therapy.

A bit about me:

  • I love all kinds of outdoor activities: hiking, cross-country skiing, running and camping.
  • My favourite weekend activities include cooking, reading, cuddling with my cat and spending time with my family and friends.

NORTH OFFICE

While the idea of getting professional help may sound intimidating, it is actually a sign of great strength.  A psychological environment should provide a safe and encouraging space, free of judgement, where you can see that change is possible! My passion is joining your journey through therapy and celebrating every milestone by your side. It should be an honouring and rewarding experience for both of us.

I am a Registered Provisional Psychologist with a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from Adler University in Vancouver, BC. By exploring your frame of reference to the world, I use a humanistic approach to discover the root of the problem, and work towards understanding how your experiences shape your perception, and the lens in which you view yourself.

As a psychologist, I incorporate attachment theory, mindfulness, aspects of systems therapy, the HAES approach (health at every size), and a trauma approach.

I have specialized training in several therapeutic approaches, such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which involves challenging unhelpful thoughts and behaviours
  • Narrative Therapy, or evaluating stories we develop about ourselves
  • Compassionate Inquiry, to access what is beneath the way we portray ourselves to the world
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), learning to accept our thoughts and feelings instead of fighting against them
  • Currently training in Somatic Experiencing, creating a deeper understanding of the body/mind connection by emphasizing the story our bodies tell us.

I come from a multidisciplinary healthcare setting, where I was given the opportunity to work with a variety of problems presenting in adults and adolescents. Some of the areas that I enjoy working with include (and are not limited to) trauma, disordered eating, those who have experienced domestic violence, LGBTQ2S+ experiences, chronic pain, and supporting people with family members who struggle with addictions.

NORTH OFFICE

What does one put here? My name is Ashley and I’m a psychologist? That I completed my PhD in Clinical Psychology in 2012 from the University of Saskatchewan seems a little stuffy, but necessary.

My philosophy on life and change? I’m still working that out. I guess what I probably need to say is that I do this work because I love to celebrate the successes, absurdities, and challenges of my clients.

I recognize that seeking out therapy is a challenging decision for many and I have the opportunity to work with people through what are some of the most difficult times in their lives. I like to approach my clients with warmth, humor, and directness and I work hard to make my office a safe place for people to explore the darkness and the light that exists within them, and indeed all of us.

If we are going to get down to the technicalities here, my theoretical orientation is an interpersonal perspective which in short means that I work to understand how we relate to others is critical to our mental health. We are all trying to be happy we are all trying to get our emotional needs met, but sometimes we just need a little help with that.

I apply this perspective to a variety of issues including substance use, relationship problems, domestic violence and abusive behaviors, and problematic pornography use. Change is hard work and I am honored to work with my clients to achieve it.

A little about me:

  • I love to travel.
  • I have been to 5 continents and I love to see the world and meet the amazing people living all over our beautiful planet.
  • I love my dog, I feel lukewarm about my cats, and I can’t imagine a better afternoon than reading a book in the sunshine on my deck.

I look forward to meeting you!

* Currently Ashley does NOT take appointments for couples therapy and adolescent therapy.

SOUTH OFFICE

I love the work that I do. I love learning about what makes you thrive, and helping you discover what you truly want to see come to life within you. When people hear what I do for work, they often say something along the lines of “That must be challenging/hard/sad”. At times, my work can certainly be challenging, but it’s also an immense privilege to sit with my clients and hear their stories. It’s incredible to see their progress and growth, and witness all the ways they feel connected. Though there are moments of sadness and pain, there’s also beauty in the joy, growth, and connection my clients experience.

I work with couples and adult individuals. Therapy takes trust, and vulnerability. I strive to create a space for my clients where we can be open, honest, and work towards your goals at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

I enjoy working with couples, no matter how long you’ve been together. Sue Johnson says: Underneath all the distress, partners are asking each other: Will you respond to me when I need, when I call? Do I matter to you? Am I valued and accepted by you? Do you need me, rely on me? I want to help you connect meaningfully in your relationships, to feel seen, heard, cared for, and connected with your partner. I’ve studied Gottman Therapy, and Emotionally-Focused therapy, which are grounded in deepening and strengthening our connection to our partner. We can learn skills and work through tough issues and hurts of the past to increase the quality of your relationship.

I also work with adult individuals. Ultimately, I want to help you feel at home within yourself. I believe you are your own best expert. I work from a variety of approaches, including Satir Family Systems. Together, we can uncover what you truly value in life, and better understand who you are. I want to help you align your decisions and behaviors with what you value, feel, and desire.

I see huge growth and changes when clients stay invested in therapy outside of our sessions, so I’m happy to send handouts, book suggestions, videos, or podcasts to help your continued growth, if that’s your cup of tea.

I hold an Honors, Bachelor of Arts with a specialization in Psychology from the University of Ottawa, and a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology from Trinity Western University. I also specialize in perinatal mental health, and maternal health. If you’ve experienced the loss of a pregnancy or a traumatic birth, You may have loved ones who have no idea what you’ve experienced, and you may feel isolated and alone in your experience. We can navigate this together, and all the complexities of how you feel and how it impacts your relationships.

Lastly, a little about myself. Therapy is so personal, and I only think it’s fair I share a little about who I am with you:

  • I’ve lived in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, France, Vancouver, and I’m glad to now call Edmonton home.
  • I love playing sports, particularly playing and coaching soccer, and I’m working towards becoming a referee for Roller Derby.
  • I’m a foodie and a tea enthusiast. You can usually catch me cooking an elaborate meal in the kitchen for loved ones, or at farmers markets in the summer.
  • Halloween is my absolute favorite day of the year, and I love carving pumpkins.

SOUTH OFFICE

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to work in a profession where I was able to lend a helping hand to others. I stumbled upon the world of psychology accidentally while I was completing a counselling course as part of my undergraduate degree in Education. There was a strong feeling from within that told me I would one day love to be a psychologist and here I am.

A strong collaboration between myself, my client, supportive family members and other professionals is important to me. I call my office the “no judgment zone” where we are able to feel comfortable exploring various challenges and working towards finding viable solutions.

There is no cookie cutter or “one size fits all” approach when it comes to therapy. I work very much from a client-centred approach to understand the world as you see it. I draw from areas including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, and Solution Focused Therapy. Part of therapy is us deciding together what approach will work best for you.

I remind my clients that they are the driver of our therapy vehicle. I might do some backseat driving every now and then- encouraging you to turn a certain way, but you are always in charge. If there is something you aren’t quite ready to explore, I will always take your lead. My goal as your therapist is to provide you with a comfortable space where you can open up at your pace.

A bit about me outside of the therapy office:

• In the summer, I love biking and playing tennis.
• In the winter, I love watching hockey. Go Oilers!
• Year round, I love spending time with my family, trying out new cafes around the city, travelling and watching shows like Friends over and over again.
• I am fluent in Hindi and Punjabi and maybe a bit of sarcasm (but that is mostly saved for outside of office hours).

SOUTH & North OFFICE

My journey here to Reframed began in University where I took a part-time job as a youth worker with high-risk youth. This position led me down a path that included working in addictions, as well as with a variety of adolescent forensic populations over the course of 10 years. This unique and diverse population provided me with experience in adolescent development, trauma, mood and personality disorders. Further, I was granted a front row seat to witness the raw resilience demonstrated by clients from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, this front line work provided me with the motivation to complete a master’s degree in counselling psychology in order to continue to support those who encounter all of life’s challenges.

I presently work with adolescents, adults and couples dealing with anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, relationship difficulties and a number of other common issues that we may face from time to time. Why is common emphasized you may ask? While mental health initiatives have come a long way in recent years, I believe it is still vital to normalize these experiences daily and my hope is to contribute to your mental well-being in any way I can. Whether it’s simply unloading day to day stressors and problem-solving, or dealing with depression and anxiety, please feel free to reach out, ask questions and come into our clinic for an intake session.

A little about me:

  • I’m a proud father to two boys.
  • I love camping and outdoor family time.
  • I probably watch too many sports.
  • WWII History is a special interest of mine.

North & SOUTH OFFICE

If you are looking for a psychologist who can see you for who you are and the possibilities that lie before you, even if you cannot, then you have come to the right place.

I consider my work with clients to be such an honour! They entrust their challenges and vulnerabilities with me in order for the two of us to work in a partnership to help them to see and attain the possibilities that could exist in their life. That trust is the very definition of privilege and the rewards of witnessing the change and the transformation in clients are truly satisfying. I have a wide range of experience with individuals, couples, and families dealing with a variety of issues. This diverse experience has allowed me to watch clients embrace the enormous change that can occur within people who are struggling and often may not be able to see their path forward.

My work focuses on people’s connections with themselves (how they see themselves as a person) and with others, using Attachment Theory. Very often when we struggle to connect, we find that we experience a variety of issues from depression to anxiety to personality struggles. By repairing and learning how to better connect, people can regulate their emotions in a healthier manner and find that they can attain their goals and dreams. Working with my clients and tailoring their therapy to their needs is an essential part of the process and, it often requires a blending of different modalities to truly meet client goals.

I have a special interest in relationship issues, trauma, and women’s health. I enjoy working with people who are struggling in their relationships, whether that is as individuals, couples, or families. The relationship dynamics that people find themselves in is often a pattern that can be interrupted, changed, and significantly improved.

With healthy, happy relationships people lead healthier more satisfied lives. Using a blend of two very well-respected methods, Gottman and Emotion-Focused Therapy, I tackle the practical side of building relationships along with the important work of creating strong, secure connections. Let’s face it, all people want to connect, to feel like they belong and when people struggle with relationships, they are lonely and find that they are grieving what they do not have.

Trauma is another area that I have a special interest in. The impact that trauma has on a person’s psychological and physiological functioning is tremendous. Being able to assist clients in processing their trauma and being able to function more effectively in their daily lives is an exciting component of my practice. When working with trauma I utilize mindfulness activities to help clients to be in the present moment and be able to ground themselves, this is a small component of a therapy called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which helps clients to be able to find their way out of unhelpful thought patterns. Additionally, I am trained in and utilize EMDR, which is an evidence-based therapy for trauma. I find this work to be especially challenging and rewarding.

The impact of women’s health on their mental health is something I feel passionately about. Often the struggles that women face with their health are not well understood and are often minimized. Helping clients to manage concerns specific to women, including perinatal and postnatal mental health, (including grief and loss) and both perimenopausal and menopausal mental health concerns, is an important component of being able to manage and live our best lives and enjoy our relationships to the fullest. Utilizing ACT and EMDR along with a sprinkling of other modalities helps to ensure that the goals of my clients are met.

I also have training and enjoy providing supervision to provisional psychologists; for more information, please check out the supervision page on our site.

So…that tells you about my work and passion in the world of psychology.

Now…how about me as a person?

• I am a proud mom of two lovely adult children, and I thoroughly enjoy hanging out with them.
• I enjoy reading for both knowledge and the occasional escape from reality.
• Travel is something I thoroughly enjoy! Whether it is a trip to the mountains or a flight overseas…I love it all.

Ok… enough about me, I’m curious and excited to hear about you!
